Two kindergartners were hurt last year after the bounce house they were playing in was sent high into the air by a strong gust of wind in upstate New York. Both children needed to be hospitalized after falling out of the inflatable playhouse.
The play set was reportedly a Little Tikes inflatable house, measuring about 10 feet on each side. This type of inflatable can be purchased at a toy store The newspapers said a resident of the apartment building had set it up for kids to play in several times before.
The weather that Monday was reportedly unusual for the area for the time of year — in the upper 80s, with high wind gusts.
These bounce houses are not inherently dangerous, they’re just flimsy and not made to endure a lot of use and wind and weight. The stakes used to keep it on the ground were plastic and not very long.
As you may surmise, it is a much better idea to use a professional inflatable rental company, especially when there will be several children playing. An inflatable slide or bounce house should be sturdy enough for teenagers and adults to play in as well. If the website of your rental company specifically says “No adults allowed”, there may be a concern for the quality of the equipment.
Bounce house injuries have become a growing issue in recent years. According to one study by doctors at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, injuries may have doubled between 2008 and 2010. At least 10 inflatables collapsed or were blown away in 2011, injuring more than 40 people.
The key phrase in the above paragraph is “collapsed or were blown away”. Obviously, if an inflatable puts people in danger, either the unit is not good quality or the set-up was done wrong.
